Dick and Joanne Anderson and their family moved to Alaska in 1970 expecting to stay two years, five at the most. Dick’s background as a classroom teacher and his PhD from the University of Oregon in the Administration of Programs for the Handicapped brought him to the Anchorage School District. He was hired as a change agent for the special education programs which, at that time, were entirely self-contained. In 1976 he and Joanne moved to Barrow for two years and then to Nome and Bethel. Dick retired from the field of education from the Aleutian Region School District. In his capacity as an administrator for several school districts, he has seen the entire coastline of Alaska from the air and has his vast collection of pictures of airplane wings to prove it. He and Joanne are charter members of the Alaska chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

A strong sense of commitment to the freedoms embodied in the Constitution's First Amendment is was what eventually brought Al to Americans United. Since first
joining the national organization in 1995, he became keenly aware of the growing influence of the religious right in our secular society. Several unsuccessful attempts to establish contact with the listed local coordinator led to an suggestion from the national office to form an Alaska Chapter. With the help of several sympathetic Unitarian friends, this was accomplished in early November, 2000. He served as chapter president through 2004.
A 24-year cheechako, he
spent his "productive" years as a design engineer with the municipality and has spent his sixteen years of retirement looking for, but not finding, a more ideal living location than Alaska. And that's after a
previous seven years in "idyllic" American Samoa, heart of the South Seas.
